Crozer Hospital Reopening: The Crozer-Chester Plan and Timeline So Far

No hospital operator has signed on yet. Here is what the new owners of Crozer-Chester have promised, what is still only a goal, and when Delaware County might see care return to the campus.

Last checked: October 29, 2026, for this Crozer hospital reopening update. This is an independent local guide, not affiliated with Crozer Health, Prospect Medical Holdings, Chariot Allaire or any health system. It is not medical advice. In an emergency, call 911.

There is no date yet for a Crozer hospital reopening. As of late October 2026, the former Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland is still empty, no health system has agreed to run it, and the owner says it hopes to know by the first quarter of 2027 whether a hospital can come back at all. The first thing likely to open is much smaller: a free primary care clinic that could start seeing patients on the campus as early as March 2027, if a grant comes through. For the wider picture across all four former Crozer sites, see our latest Crozer update.

Below is what has actually been promised, what is still only a goal, and where people in southern Delaware County can get care in the meantime.

Is Crozer-Chester reopening? The short answer

Not as the hospital people remember. Crozer-Chester closed in spring 2025, a few months after Prospect Medical Holdings filed for bankruptcy. In January 2026 a partnership of Chariot Equities and Allaire Health Services, now called Chariot Allaire, bought the campus out of bankruptcy for $10 million. We cover that deal in detail in who bought each Crozer hospital and what they paid.

The new owner is a real estate developer, not a hospital operator. Its plan depends on persuading an established health system to run clinical services on the site. At a virtual town hall on October 21, 2026, CEO Yoel Polack said that after a months-long search, no organization had signed on yet. “We cannot promise any outcome,” he said, adding that the company hopes for “more clarity” in early 2027, WHYY reported.

What a Crozer hospital reopening would include

The plan has stayed fairly consistent since the owners first met the public at Widener University on April 14, 2026. According to WHYY’s account of that meeting, Chariot Allaire wants to “rightsize” the inpatient hospital to roughly a tenth of its old footprint and reopen the 64-acre campus in phases. Polack called the plan “aspirational” and said it could take two to three years.

The Philadelphia Inquirer summed up the full wish list in October: an emergency department, a small hospital above it, outpatient services and a behavioral health hospital. In June, the Philadelphia Business Journal, via DELCO.Today, reported a target of about 80 inpatient beds, compared with the 424 Crozer-Chester staffed before it closed.

Piece of the planStatus as of October 2026
Primary care clinic (Neumann University, Independence Blue Cross Foundation)Grant application under review; could open as early as March 2027
Emergency departmentIn the plan, but needs an operator and enough emergency physicians
Small inpatient hospital (about 80 beds reported)No operator; renovation cost not yet estimated
Cardiology, oncology, neuroscienceBeing studied with Penn Medicine’s help
Behavioral health hospital (west campus, the old Community Campus)No provider has come forward
Labor and deliveryLikely not included, citing cost and staffing
North campus, including the historic Old Main building“Complementary medical uses” hoped for; other uses being considered if the hospital plan stalls

Crozer hospital reopening timeline so far

Here is how the Crozer hospital reopening effort has moved, date by date. For the closure itself, see our Crozer closure timeline.

  1. Spring 2025: Crozer-Chester’s ER closes April 30 and the hospital closes in early May; Taylor Hospital had closed days earlier. More than 2,600 people lose their jobs, including about 1,200 nurses, 6abc reported.
  2. January 2026: Chariot Equities and Allaire Health Services complete their $10 million purchase.
  3. April 14, 2026: First public town hall, at Widener. The owners say they are entering a 60- to 90-day study with two or three academic medical centers, and that primary care backed by the Independence Blue Cross Foundation could return “within the next nine months.” Chester Mayor Stefan Roots warns that the building is stripped bare: no beds, no computers, no X-ray machines.
  4. June 2026: An unnamed Philadelphia-area health system is reported to be in due diligence to become the lead provider. Penn Medicine declines to say whether it is involved; ChristianaCare says it is not in active talks.
  5. October 21, 2026: Second town hall, held online with comments turned off. Penn Medicine is helping plan services but, in Penn’s words to the Inquirer, “is not operating the site.” No operator has agreed to run the hospital. The owners now point to the first quarter of 2027 for an answer.

Why the Crozer hospital reopening is taking so long

Three problems keep coming up. The first is the operator. Chariot Allaire owns the land and buildings, but the health system it brings in will decide which services open, Polack said in April. Without that partner, nothing clinical can start.

The second is money. State Sen. Tim Kearney said in April that the owners were talking about a $250 million price tag, and that most of it would not come from the state. In October the owners said they still had no final renovation estimate, because the cost depends on which services an operator chooses. They have been in regular contact with the governor’s office.

The third is the wider health care market. Dr. Arthur Klein, the owners’ chief health care adviser, told the October town hall that hospital supply costs are rising 8% to 12% a year and labor costs about 8%. He also pointed to expected Medicaid cuts under the 2025 federal spending law. Staffing worries him most: he said a good emergency department is impossible without enough board-certified emergency physicians willing to work there.

Will Crozer-Chester have an emergency room again?

An ER is part of the plan on paper. Klein said in April that an emergency room is “absolutely part of the plan,” and the October update listed emergency care first among the services being planned. But no one has committed to run it, and the owners have not given a date. Treat any reopening date you see on social media with caution until an operator is named publicly.

Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park may move first. Kearney said in April he hoped Taylor would reopen sooner than the other former Crozer sites because the building is in better shape and already the right size. We track that separately in who bought Taylor Hospital and what’s planned there.

The primary care clinic: what to expect first

The nearest real milestone is a free clinic run by Neumann University’s nursing program. Nurse practitioner students and faculty would see patients in an old office space on the main campus. The Independence Blue Cross Foundation reviewed Neumann’s grant application on October 15, and the program’s associate dean said she expects good news. If it is funded, WHYY reported, the clinic could open as early as March 2027.

That would be a modest start: primary care visits, not emergency or hospital care. Earlier reporting also mentioned talks with Widener University and ChesPenn Health Services of Chester.

Where to go for care until Crozer reopens

For now, people in Chester, Upland and nearby towns are going elsewhere. Riddle Hospital in Media and Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby have absorbed much of the extra demand. In June 2026, ChristianaCare opened a small hospital in Aston at 700 Turner Industrial Way, with a 24/7 emergency department of 10 treatment beds, DELCO.Today reported.

Our list of where to go until Crozer reopens has addresses and ER details for every open hospital in Delaware County. If you live in Chester itself, our guide to the nearest hospitals for Chester residents lists the closest options. If you still need records from your old Crozer care, start with how to request your Crozer medical records; the county says old Crozer records are scheduled for destruction after March 2, 2027.

What happened to Old Main

The campus also holds Old Main, the former Crozer Theological Seminary building where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. studied. At the October town hall, the owners’ restoration lead said items tied to King’s time there, including the door to his dorm room, have been removed and stored on the property. He described the wood as in good shape but the mortar as crumbling, and said the building also carries a fire risk. No decision on its future has been announced.

Frequently asked questions

Is Crozer hospital reopening in 2026?

No. Nothing clinical has reopened on the Crozer-Chester campus in 2026, and the owners have not set a hospital opening date. They expect to know in the first quarter of 2027 whether a health system will run services there.

Who owns Crozer-Chester Medical Center now?

Chariot Allaire, a partnership of Chariot Equities, a health care real estate firm, and Allaire Health Services. It bought the campus for $10 million in January 2026.

Is Penn Medicine taking over Crozer?

Not as of October 2026. Penn is helping the owners study what services are needed and sustainable, but Penn told the Inquirer it “is not operating the site.”

When will primary care come back to the Crozer campus?

Possibly March 2027, if Neumann University’s grant from the Independence Blue Cross Foundation is approved. That clinic would offer primary care only.

Will the new Crozer deliver babies?

Probably not. The owners’ health care adviser said in October that labor and delivery will likely not be part of the plan because of cost and staffing.
