Crozer-Chester Medical Center: history, closure and what's next

For six decades, Crozer-Chester was Delaware County's largest hospital and its only trauma center. However, it closed on May 2, 2025. Since then, new owners have bought the campus and plan to bring some care back, but no hospital has reopened.

Last checked October 8, 2026. Because reopening plans change often, we recheck them monthly.

02 — History

Two Chester hospitals become one

Chester Hospital opened in 1893, and the J. Lewis Crozer Homeopathic Hospital followed in 1903. Then, in 1963, the two merged as Crozer-Chester Medical Center on the Upland campus. Later, in 1990, Crozer-Chester joined Delaware County Memorial Hospital to form the Crozer-Keystone Health System. Over time, the system also grew to include Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park and Springfield Hospital.

On July 1, 2016, the for-profit Prospect Medical Holdings bought Crozer-Keystone. Then, in September 2020, the system took the name Crozer Health. Over the next few years, however, it shut services and hospitals. For example, Springfield stopped inpatient and emergency care in January 2022, and Delaware County Memorial closed the same year.

03 — The closure

How Crozer-Chester Medical Center closed

In October 2024, Pennsylvania's Attorney General sued Prospect over $457 million in dividends that the company had paid out. That December, a flood and electrical fire forced an ICU evacuation at the hospital (what happened in the Crozer-Chester fires). Then, on January 12, 2025, Prospect filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and a receiver took over Crozer in February. After efforts to keep the hospitals open failed, Delaware County declared a health emergency on April 21, 2025. Finally, Taylor Hospital closed on April 26, Crozer-Chester's emergency department on April 30, and the hospital on May 2, 2025. See the full Crozer closure timeline.

What the county lost

The county lost its only trauma center, a regional burn unit and hundreds of inpatient beds. In addition, about 2,651 Crozer Health employees lost their jobs across the system. Meanwhile, average ambulance transport times in the county rose from 9 minutes in 2018 to 40 minutes in May 2025.

Crozer's residents and fellows moved to Penn Medicine, Main Line Health, Jefferson, Temple and other systems. See where each program went. Meanwhile, patient records went to Morgan Records Management, so request yours before March 2, 2027.

04 — What's next

What's next for the Crozer-Chester campus

Jan 2026

Chariot Equities and Allaire Health Services buy the campus for $10 million. At first, they aim to find a nonprofit operator within six months and to start services within about two years.

Apr 2026

Next, the owners describe a primary care practice within nine months. Then, in two to three years, they plan an inpatient hospital about a tenth the old size.

Jun 2026

Then Neumann University announces a primary care partnership with the new owners, who are also studying partnerships with regional academic medical centers.

Oct 2026

However, nobody has publicly named a hospital operator. So all of these remain plans, and nothing on the campus is open to patients.

We'll update this page the week anything opens. Until then, see hospitals and ERs open now.
