Where Lankenau Medical Center is, and why Delco patients go there

The hospital sits in Lower Merion Township, just off City Avenue. The Philadelphia Inquirer described it as sitting “at the intersection of West Philadelphia and Montgomery and Delaware Counties.” As a result, for Haverford Township, Upper Darby and Havertown, it is often closer than Riddle in Media.

After Crozer-Chester and Taylor closed in May 2025, Delaware County was left with two hospitals, Riddle and Mercy Fitzgerald, and neither is a trauma center. WHYY reported in July 2025 that patients with serious problems may now be taken out of the county to places such as Lankenau, Penn Presbyterian or Christiana Hospital. In addition, the same story quoted a Main Line Health spokesperson describing an “unprecedented 50% increase” in emergency department volume across the system. If you live in Chester or the river towns, our guide to hospitals near Chester, PA compares the realistic options from there.

The Lankenau hospital emergency room

The emergency department is open around the clock at the same Lancaster Avenue campus. Main Line Health does not publish a separate ER phone line on its Lankenau page, so in a true emergency call 911 instead of calling ahead. The ER has its own entrance with a parking pay station beside it.

The Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation lists Lankenau as a Level II adult trauma center. In practice, that means it treats serious injuries around the clock, but the most complex cases may still be transferred to a Level I center in Philadelphia. Our page on trauma centers near Delaware County explains the difference and lists the Level I options.

A few things to expect at the ER:

  • The sickest patients are seen first, not the earliest arrivals. Main Line Health says critically ill or injured patients “are always given priority.”
  • Exam and treatment rooms are private.
  • Visitors are limited to one or two people per patient, and they are expected to stay at the bedside.

On the other hand, for a sprain, a fever or a cut that might need stitches, a Main Line Health urgent care is usually faster. The nearest ones for most of Delco are in Broomall (1991 Sproul Road, in Lawrence Park Shopping Center) and Concordville (1020 Baltimore Pike, Glen Mills). Both are open weekdays 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and weekends 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to the Main Line Health urgent care page, which also shows current wait times.

Lankenau visiting hours and visitor rules

Lankenau visiting hours run from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Sunday. The same rules apply at every Main Line Health hospital, so if you have visited someone at Riddle you already know them; our Riddle visiting hours guide walks through the system-wide policy in more detail.

  • ID required. Every visitor picks up a temporary badge from the greeters at the main entrance, and you need a government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport to get one.
  • Two at a time. Patients can have two visitors at once, and people can swap in and out during the day.
  • Overnight stays. Visitors can ask to stay the night. If you need to visit outside normal hours, Main Line Health asks you to discuss it with the supervisor.
  • Children. Kids under 12 must be with an adult.
  • Maternity. Visiting is open 24 hours. In labor and delivery, two support people may be at the bedside, plus a Main Line Health registered doula if you have one.

The care team has the final say on visits, according to Main Line Health’s visitation guidelines. Meanwhile, each patient floor has a lounge, and an interfaith prayer and meditation room on the first floor is open 24 hours.

Parking at Lankenau Medical Center and finding your way

Getting there without a car

From Delaware County, the simplest transit trip starts at 69th Street Transportation Center in Upper Darby. Main Line Health says to take the 105 bus from there to the hospital; the G bus also stops at Lankenau. By train, ride the Paoli/Thorndale Regional Rail line to Overbrook, then walk about 15 minutes up City Avenue and west along Lancaster Avenue. Either way, check SEPTA for current schedules before you go.

Medical records and bills

Lankenau records are handled by Main Line Health’s central Health Information Management team, not by the hospital front desk. You request them with an Authorization for Disclosure of Health Information form, sent by mail, email or fax to 610-356-3167. Copy fees follow the Pennsylvania schedule that took effect January 1, 2026 ($2 a page for pages 1 to 20, then less per page), and the first copy of diagnostic images is free. However, records sent straight to your doctor cost nothing. The full details are on the Main Line Health medical records page.

Old Crozer records are a separate matter, handled by Crozer’s records custodian; our Crozer medical records guide explains how to request them. Bills can be paid through Main Line Health MyChart or by phone at 484-476-2128.
